What a wonderful afternoon of skill, determination, team work and fun! The children were brilliant across the whole afternoon whilst taking part in the various activities.
It all started with a carousel of different events. The children rotated around to each event in their teams, led by the team leaders. They all participated in each event showing a range of skills from throwing, jumping, football dribbling, completing an assault course, balancing (in the egg and spoon race) etc. Parents and caregivers were able to rotate around with the children and watch the skills on show!
Following this, whilst the children had their drinks (donated by the local Spar – thank you very much!), the cheer-leading squad performed their routine. All the practices and hard work paid off as they performed the routine of dance and gymnastics brilliantly! Everybody enjoyed their performance and Miss Mann felt incredibly proud of them.
Next came the toddler race, triggering the start of all the races. It was lovely to see so many children taking part with their parents/siblings and other family. Reception followed with their race and there are some speedy children! Then, each year group completed their relay races in a blur of colour!
The final race was the leavers race. The Year 6’s removed their shoes and socks and completed an obstacle course as a 3-legged race! Part of this race involved them standing in a tray of tinned spaghetti! However, they took part with a great sense of team spirit and fun!
The overall winner of Sports Day was the red team! Well done to them! The scores were quite close so all participated enthusiastically and should be proud of their achievements. Other winners from Year 6, for showing such excellent sportsmanship and team work throughout the year, were Cameron and Helena. Well done to you both!
The team leaders need to be mentioned for their solid leadership all afternoon, but also their thoughtfulness and support to the younger children. It was heart-warming to see how kind and patient they were to the Sandpipers and Kittiwakes, helping them with activities and and encouraging them the whole way around. These are such important qualities to have in life; they did themselves and their school proud.
Last, but by no means least, a huge thank you to all the parents who came to support the event. It was lovely that so many of you came! Also, huge thanks to Mrs Wheeler and parent helpers who gave their time to serve teas and coffees and other refreshments throughout the whole afternoon or who baked cakes to sell. You always give your time so generously for the benefit of us all and it is always so appreciated.
Finally, thank you to all the staff at Starcross. An event like this needs some organisation and all chipped in merrily! However, Mr Cross, as P.E coordinator, had the main responsibility to make sure the rest of us knew what we needed to do as well as all the children! Great job Mr. Cross! Same again next year please 🙂
We hope you enjoy the video showing some photos of the event.
