Oystercatchers were encouraged to play with their food yesterday by doing some experiments with celery.
We were trying to prove how plants use their stems and “xylem” vessels to transport water and minerals around plants.
We cut the bottoms off fresh celery and left the stalks in some water with food colouring for a few hours, then dissected the stalks to see what had happened. The red colour had travelled all the way up the stalks!
We even managed to pull out some red “strings” demonstrating how the water had travelled.
We have left one particularly leafy stalk in some food colouring to see if it will turn the leaves red.
