Welcome to Oystercatchers!
Mr Collett is Class Teacher with help from Mrs Grocock, Mrs Jarratt and Miss Houghton. Feel free to chat to us at the classroom door at drop-off or pick-up times, or send an email in to admin@starcross-primary.devon.sch.uk if you have any questions. Read on to find out what we will be doing in the Summer Term.
Our Cornerstones project this term is Empires and Emperors and lots of our learning will be linked to this topic.
Literacy
Our first literacy topic this term will be biographies. We have started by writing biographies of people we know, and will be moving on to research some (worthy!) celebrities and writing biographies of them to put together into a compilation.
Our Class Story is Stig of the Dump – a classic children’s novel exploring themes of friendship, imagination and acceptance of others despite their differences.
Everyday we will develop our reading skills through Guided Reading where we will explore lots of different types of texts – so far we have read View From a Railway Carriage by Robert Louis Stevenson, The Pig by Roald Dahl, The Highwayman by Alfred Noyes, Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe and other great texts.
We will also work on handwriting and spelling – don’t forget to practice this week’s spellings on Spelling Frame!
Maths
We will continue to follow the White Rose Maths programme.
So far this term we have covered fractions and decimals, measurement, and every week we have a calculation practice with a different operation focus each week.
The children need to keep working on their times tables. All areas of maths are much easier to learn when that knowledge is already secure – Doodlemaths and Times Tables Rock Stars are excellent ways of supporting this at home.
Science
This term we are learning all about plants – we have already been looking at different parts of plants with hand lenses and microscopes.
History
In history we will be learning about Empires and Emperors, with a focus on the Romans and how life in Britain changed. We will look at both primary and secondary sources of evidence, and learn about the historical skills of chronology, cause and consequence, and change and continuity.
Design and Technology
We are learning about greenhouses and will be designing and constructing our own mini greenhouses out of wood and plastic materials, learning about measuring, cutting and joining techniques and equipment.
PE
Our topic for this term is athletics. We will be working on our running, jumping and throwing skills. Later in the term we will be getting the cover off the swimming pool and getting in for a swim!
ICT
This half term we will be learning to create presentations using Powerpoint, tying this in with our writing of biographies and history topics.
Music
This term we will be taking part in a ukulele workshop with some expert musicians coming in to class!
RE
The focus for this term is Christianity and we will be learning about Pentecost.
