In Year 2, the children develop their confidence and fluency in reading and writing, and use phonics, based on Read Write Inc. to support them. We are now focussing on comprehension skills, with our daily guided reading sessions. We have daily Maths lessons, and we also have a ’10 minute Maths’ session most days, to help with understanding key facts, confidence and fluency.
We love seeing the progress the children make in all areas over the year, from their achievements in lessons, to their growing confidence and independence.
This term, our English will include fiction and non-fiction texts, such as ‘Fantastic Mr Fox’ by Roald Dahl, and ‘Reptiles’ by Angela Royston. We also have a focus on both spelling and handwriting skills, as well as developing strategies for independent writing.
Our History topic is ‘Magnificent Monarchs’. This project teaches children about the English and British monarchy from AD 871 to the present day. Using timelines, information about royal palaces, portraits and other historical sources, they build up an understanding of the monarchs and then research six of the most significant sovereigns.
Our Art topic ‘Portraits and Poses’ is linked to our History topic. We will explore various portraits, including the portraits of Tudor monarchs, and compare Tudor portraits and selfies today.
In Geography, we will build on our earlier work using atlases and maps, and will learn about different areas in the world, comparing their location, geographical features and climate.
In Science, this term we are covering habitats and living things. This includes animal groups, food chains, what animals need to survive, different habitats and how humans can help and harm habitats. We also have a visit to Stover Country Park, where we can learn more about different habitats.
